TYPES OF CAR INSURANCE COVERAGE

Auto insurance covers damage to your vehicle, damages/injuries you cause if you hit someone else, and much more. Check out the different types of coverage we offer below and get a customized car insurance quote.

Liability
Covers you if you're at fault in an accident (Progressive auto insurance)

Your basic car insurance plan begins with auto liability. Liability insurance is generally required by state law and protects you financially when you're liable for your actions as a driver:

Bodily injury liability: Pays medical bills and lost income (up to your limits) if you hit someone and they're injured. This covers anyone in the accident, plus legal fees if you're taken to court as a result of the incident.

Property damage liability: Pays for damages (up to your limits) to someone else's vehicle and/or property.

Example: You lose control of your vehicle and hit your neighbor standing in their driveway, along with their car and mailbox. Liability will cover your neighbor's injuries and the cost to repair their mailbox and vehicle.

If you're looking for a "full-coverage" auto quote, understand that the term is a bit of a myth. "Full-coverage" car insurance means something different to everyone, but it usually includes protecting your vehicle with comprehensive and collision coverage.

Comprehensive
Covers events beyond your control (Progressive auto insurance)
Comprehensive coverage protects your vehicle against fire, theft, vandalism, hitting an animal, glass breakage, or weather/acts of nature. A deductible (the amount of money you'll pay out of pocket before your insurer pays the rest) usually applies, but you'll be able to choose the amount.

Example: You hit a deer, wrecking your front bumper and windshield. The damage amounts to $2,500. Your deductible is $250, so we'll pay you $2,250.

Collision
Covers car accidents (Progressive auto insurance)
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your damaged vehicle if you collide with another object, including vehicles, curbs, trees, etc. Collision covers you regardless of fault and also includes a deductible.

Example: Your car skids on an icy highway and plows into a guardrail, causing $5,000 in damage to your vehicle. Your deductible is $500, so we'll pay you $4,500.

Free coverage for pet injuries: If you have collision coverage, and your pet is injured in an auto accident, Progressive covers your vet bills up to a specified limit.

Uninsured/underinsured bodily injury
Covers your injuries if someone else hits you and can't pay (Progressive auto insurance)
Uninsured/underinsured bodily injury covers you and your passengers (up to your limits) if you're injured in an accident and the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance.

Example: You're rear-ended in a car accident and the other driver has no auto insurance. We'll pay for your medical bills and lost income as a result of the incident.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage
Covers your vehicle if someone else hits you and can't pay (Progressive auto insurance)
Uninsured/underinsured property damage pays to repair or replace your vehicle (up to your limits) if you're hit by a driver with not enough insurance or none at all.

Example: Your car is totaled after an uninsured driver crashes into it. Your policy's uninsured property damage will cover the cost to replace your vehicle up to a specified limit. A deductible may apply.

Medical payments
Covers your injuries, funeral expenses, and more (Progressive auto insurance)
If you're in an accident, medical payments will pay for medical and funeral expenses (up to your limits). Medical payments can also cover your family members or passengers, regardless of fault. The coverage also applies if you or your family members are passengers in other vehicles or hit by a car while you're walking or riding a bicycle.

In some states, personal injury protection is offered for medical payments and protects you in a similar way.

Example: You're in a fender bender on your lunch break and your co-worker, in the passenger's seat, is injured. Your medical payments will cover your co-worker's hospital bill (up to your limits). A deductible may apply for personal injury protection.

WHAT DOES HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE COVER?

Homeowners insurance covers so much more than just your house. Homeowners also covers other structures on your property (barn, shed, fence), your belongings (furniture, clothes, and electronics), lawsuits, and even temporary living expenses during home repairs. And yes, these coverages come standard at no extra cost. Just get a homeowners insurance quote, and you can see all your coverages.

These are the basic progressive home insurance coverages and come standard in your homeowners’ policy.

Dwelling coverage

Covers damage to your house and attachments
Dwelling coverage pays for damage to your house and anything permanently attached to it, including your garage, roof, chimneys, attached deck, countertops, cabinets, flooring, vanities, etc.

Example: A pipe in your kitchen bursts and water damages your walls, cabinets, countertops, appliances, and hardwood floors. This then pays to repair or replace what's damaged and water removal.

Other structures

Covers structures not permanently attached to your house
Other structures coverage includes unattached garages, gazebos, decks, patios, sheds, pergolas, fences, driveways, etc.

Example: During a windstorm, a tree falls and damages your shed, fence, deck, and pool. This then pays to repair or replace the structures that were damaged and tree removal.

Personal possessions

Covers your belongings if they're stolen or damaged
Personal possessions covers just about all of your stuff if it's damaged or stolen. This can include electronics, furniture, clothes, tools/power equipment, and more. Your items are even covered if they're not stored in your home (sheds, garages, your car, storage facilities, etc.).

Example: Someone breaks into your car and steals your phone, clothes, and camping equipment. You'll then get payment for those items, but there may be limitations on some of them.

Jewelry, art, memorabilia, computers, and other expensive items: Certain limits may apply to your more expensive items, but don't worry, you can get additional coverage for jewelry and other expensive items. Just complete your quote, and we'll guide you through adding the right coverage as you're buying. Plus, we have licensed home insurance agents available to help.

Loss of use

Covers temporary living expenses
You'll never be left homeless. If your home is damaged from a covered loss (meaning something insurance pays for) and you can't stay there, loss of use covers hotel, rent, and food expenses above what you'd normally pay.

Example: There's a fire in your home, and you can't stay there for two weeks. If you spend $1,000 eating out, loss of use will cover that food bill beyond what you normally spend, and your rent/hotel expenses. Make sure you keep your receipts.

Personal liability

Covers lawsuits against you
If someone sues you or a family member you live with (for injuries or damage to their property), personal liability will pay for your lawyer, court fees, and certain damages you have to pay, subject to your policy.

Example: A delivery person slips and falls at your house and sues you for their medical bills, lost wages, and damaged merchandise. Or, your child spray paints your neighbor's garage, and they sue you. Personal liability covers all of those instances.

Medical payments

Covers injuries on your property
Medical payments coverage pays for medical bills if someone else is hurt at your home or on your property.

Example: Your child's friend breaks her arm at your house, and their parents ask you to pay the medical bill. Medical payments then covers medical costs.

You can add any of these coverages to customize your policy based on your needs.

Water back-up

Covers water damage from backed-up sump pumps and sewer systems
Some homes have sump pumps in their basements/crawl spaces, which are designed to pump water out from underneath and around your foundation. Sometimes sump pumps or plumbing/sewer systems get backed up. Water can then flood into your house, causing an expensive mess. Water back-up coverage will then pay for damage to your belongings and water removal.

Example: Your sump pump breaks down, and water/sewage floods back into your basement, damaging your carpet, furniture, billiards table, washer, and dryer. Water back-up then pays for the sewage removal and that damage to your property.

Personal injury

Covers uncommon but expensive lawsuits and situations
Personal injury covers your legal fees and additional damages from:

Slander or libel lawsuits (something you say/write that damages a person's reputation or business)
Lawsuits against you such as wrongful entry or malicious prosecution
Wrongful eviction
False arrest, detention, or imprisonment

Example: Your teenage child damages their teacher's reputation by posting something online. So the teacher decides to sue you. Personal injury will then cover your lawyer, court fees, and any damages you have to pay, subject to your policy.
